"The purpose of art is to heal. I believe that every person
is a special kind of artist rather than the common belief
that artists are special kinds of people." - Samuel Avital
About Joyce
I have been on a creative and inner search for most of my life, and my path has followed many forms. I come from a background that includes 45 years of meditation practice ensuing from formal engagement in spiritual practice; I was a stay at home mom with a blended family of five; I was a theater costume designer for ten years; I established JK Design, a wearable art design company that involved studying and traveling in other cultures, selling and exhibiting my work throughout the US and abroad; I have worked with patients as an Art Therapist in various settings. I taught Stress Management and Death and Dying at a local community college and was a clinical supervisor for Art Therapy students. I have also faced and grown through unwelcomed changes in my life, including divorce, death of a child, death of a parent, job loss and cancer, to name a few.
The essential, life-giving force of creativity has been for me a lifelong exploration. The experience of traveling and discovering the essential place of art and creativity remaining in many cultures inspired a midlife career change. I went back to school and completed a Master’s Degree in Art Therapy.
Art Therapy brings art, creativity, spiritual search and healing full circle for me. Art has always been more than just making a pretty object. I see firsthand how art and creativity can help heal and open people to more essential parts of themselves. We all can use art and our creative self to gain clarity, work through issues and loss, and move towards healing and wholeness. My goal is to assist this process in my clients.
